At Asterisk Marketing we get excited when small businesses jump on board the digital marketing train. There’s nothing better than helping clients experience the value of a digital marketing investment on their business goals. So, whether you’re new to the game or just looking for some tips to keep you on track, here’s a list of digital marketing do’s and don’ts to remember.
DO: Be mobile friendly
There’s no denying it; mobile devices have become tightly woven into the fabric of our society. How many times have you witnessed someone doing a quick price check while shopping, reading a blog post while waiting in line, or doing a quick search for Facebook or Google reviews? The capabilities of our mobile devices are increasing, not to mention the amount of time the average person spends on their devices per day. In today’s overly connected digital world, tailoring your marketing efforts to be mobile friendly is key.
Do: Know your audience
When you know who you’re directing your digital marketing efforts to, it can make a significant impact on the type of digital marketing strategies and tools you employ. For example, if you’re target audience is teenage girls, you might want to develop some short, attention-grabbing videos or recruit some brand ambassadors that will promote your product or service on social media channels. If you’re targeting retired men who are looking for new golf clubs, they may be more interested in the information you have on your blog or website, or what the story Google reviews is telling.
Do: Provide added value
Providing value is about more than merely promoting your product or service. Think less used car salesman, and more helpful neighbor. Consider how you can demonstrate value to your customers through your content. For example, if you’re trying to sell a barbeque, try writing a blog post on summer grilling tips, or creating and sharing a video on how to properly clean and maintain your barbeque to keep it in pristine condition, rain or shine.
Don’t: Boil the ocean
There are more than a handful of great digital marketing tools available, but that doesn’t mean you need to use them all! Some tools will suit your business better than others, and you know what they say, it’s better to do one thing well than ten things badly. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t have a multichannel digital marketing strategy – you should, as long as you have a plan and are active across all platforms. Whatever you chose to do, do it well. Start with becoming exceptional at a few strategies and go from there.
Don’t: Forget about SEO
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a powerful digital marketing tool that helps ensure you get noticed online. SEO includes a variety of strategies and actions that help improve your websites position on search engines. Let’s use the barbeque example from earlier. You know you’re not the only retailer of barbeques out there, so how do you compete in the online space and ensure your website has the best chance of ranking high during a Google search? That’s where SEO comes in. Improving your SEO will increase your website’s organic visibility in search results when a user types in keywords relevant to your business.
Don’t: Forget to ask for help!
Enlisting the help of a digital marketing professional can help you achieve your goals and focus your efforts. They can also help you determine what tools and strategies are best for you based on time, budget, etc., and help you navigate uncharted territory like SEO or Facebook ads.
